ELK market metal is based in the southern parts of Sweden and draws inspiration from all things forest and nature. Our aim is to create durable precious metal jewellery, made especially with the babywearing customer in mind but suitable for all. With focus on recycled and environmentally sustainable materials, these pieces are ready to be worn in a variety of different ways. ELK market metal believes in creating responsibly, with respect for our planet and those who inhabit it. We will not try to sell you our jewellery by telling you that you are something that needs to be fixed.
You are enough.
Every piece from ELK market metal is created with purpose and intention. When it arrives with you, you are free to take from it what serves you, and to go on filling it with a meaning of your own.
The story continues with you.
ELK market metal is a one woman business, founded and run by me, Lotta H Löthgren. A librarian by trade with a degree in theology, I have always been using my hands to express that which cannot easily be put into the words I surround myself with in my profession. My creative outlets range from textile techniques such as knitting, sewing and embroidery, to watercolour painting. The combination of photography and metalsmithing is my main focus, leading up to the creation of ELK market metal.
After my first child was born in 2012, I discovered the world of babywearing - the art and practice of using fabric to carry a child. Babywearing is a central part of child rearing in many cultures around the world and for me it meant the freedom to explore the forest together with my children; through the thicket and over the stone walls, with no need for roads or even trails. In 2014, my husband and I started documenting our surroundings and the wraps we used, and soon we were photographing wraps and slings for a number of brands from all over the world.
My presence in the international babywearing community led me to the notion of "mama metal" - a specific type of jewellery often consisting of a number of fused metal links attached to a sturdy chain with clasps in both ends. I was intrigued by the idea of a type of jewellery that could be combined and worn in many different ways - and that was designed to match the life of a parent of young children. I saw the pieces inspire and empower wearers and soon had a small universe of symbols and shapes in my head. The focal point in my work is redefining what I see and finding a way to express it, through the work or my hands, in precious metals.
You don't have to be a parent or babywearer to appreciate the versatility and craftmanship in ELK market metal's pieces, and if you are, your jewellery will last you through the years with small children, and beyond.
